What is an image, asks Lynda Barry in What It Is, a book of full-page color collages, “essay questions,” doodles, exercises, and musings. Also: What is ‘growing up’? Where do we we keep bad memories? What are we doing when we are looking? What is a secret, and where is it kept, and can it be a secret if it isn’t true? When did you first notice when you were bad at something?
I’m not sure when I first noticed how bad I am at writing by hand, but as I’ve mentioned before, I absolutely suck at it. There’s an extremely obvious way to improve, of course, which is called slowing down, but I can’t; I’m too impatient.
Interestingly, Barry says that when it comes to writing, “the slowest way is the fastest way”:
