“This isn’t my story to tell” was, for a little while, the first line of my most recent cowritten novel. I cut it pretty quickly and without remorse (cut the entire opening chapter, in fact), but I still sort of like it, and so when I was starting to think about what to write today—which is the story of a dishwasher repairman and the way art forges bonds—the line came to me again. Because it isn’t my story (it’s barely even a story!), but it did happen in my house, and so now you get to hear about it.
